A road repairman in the Gloucestershire county of Cheltenham has been given an unexpected promotion after he was hailed as a hero after a roadside accident involving an elderly motorist who was unable to stop her car.
The man was among a number of motorists to take a picture of the scene of the accident in a local park, with the caption: “What a scene.”
In a Facebook post, the man said: “I had a bit of a breakdown in traffic and had a collision with an elderly woman and was unable, due to a lack of road repair skills, to stop the car.”
The elderly woman was in a terrible state and I thought she needed to be helped, I thought I was doing the right thing.
“I stopped to give the elderly woman a lift and got into the car to help her and as I drove away I saw that she had just crashed.”
She was not wearing a seatbelt, she was in the passenger seat, which is an emergency.
“My first thought was to go to help, but as I approached the accident scene I realised I could not.”
Instead of helping, I was trying to get out of the way and get a picture with the car.
It was so overwhelming. “
I think the most touching thing is the support from people in the community,” he said.
“It was so overwhelming.
I just want to say thank you.
I have been very fortunate and I am thankful.”
The accident happened on Saturday night.
Police said the elderly man was taken to a local hospital but later died.
The man’s wife and two daughters were not injured.
He was not charged with any offences.
